I took your advice and stuck in back into 2wd

The truck seemed happier.

Good, I flick off the 4wd as soon as the road changes from snow to wet.

For a real 4wd/snow experience nothing beats:

Coming back, fairly burnt out, from Laguna Seca 3 day race.
4 1/2 hours done out of a 6 1/2 hour tow.
4wd Excursion towing a 24 ft. enclosed trailer (8,000lbs.)
On I80, its raining in Sacramento, hit snow at Auburn.
Headed towards an 8,000 ft. hill.
30 mi past Auburn, the CHP has the road blocked off as usual checking for snowtires/chains.
I stop at the checkpoint, road conditions are now R3, chains mandatory. Oh by the way, you have to chain up one trailer axle too.
It takes 3 hours to go 50 miles.

Funny thing about Donner Summit is that you don't see 2wds in the ditches but you see a bunch of 4wds in the ditches every time.
